Become A Housecalls Tutor

Becoming A Housecalls Tutor

Housecalls Tutoring consists of experienced, creative, highly qualified tutors teaching all subject areas and all ages, from pre-K to college.

Our clients, and therefore Housecalls, can accept only the cream of the crop.

Each applicant tutor must possess a degree from a top university and graduate coursework in his or her area of specialty. In addition, candidates must have significant experience in both working with and educating children. Finally, Housecalls tutors must have that gift for communicating, specifically the ability to connect with a child, form a strong personal relationship, and produce perceivable academic results.

What to Expect

Our students generally live in Manhattan and attend the top schools in the city. Often, they are high achievers, trying to bring an A- up to an A. On the other hand, we also work with students with mild learning issues who are quite motivated but need that helping hand. We take pride in forming healthy, ongoing tutor-student relationships throughout the academic year, and we are always there to help both our tutors and our families.

Tutoring sessions typically center on the class syllabus, homework, and upcoming exams. We work closely with the teachers and schools, providing two-way feedback on the student's needs and his or her progress. Sessions usually last 60-90 minutes and occur in the home of the student. Most students require one or two sessions a week, and sometimes an additional session during an exam week. Tutors may take on additional students depending on the demands of their schedule and feedback from our families.

What We Expect

Thorough knowledge of the subject matter and of the curriculum for the specific age and subject for which you are applying. For younger students, this means a deep understanding of learning theory, language development, and the latest theories on teaching math. For older students, this may mean proficiency with the SAT, SAT-II, or AP exams. Although we value the wealth of knowledge our graduate students have accrued, we must avoid "over-teaching," as our students have enough on their plates already.

A bachelor's degree from a top university, and at least the beginning of graduate studies in your area of specialty.

Demonstration of expertise in your desired area(s) of focus. This involves actually taking an ERB-based, SAT, SAT-II, or AP exam during the interview process. Only those with perfect scores are considered. Tutors may apply for more than one area of specialty.

Experience with teaching and tutoring, as well as a clear demonstration of your passion and commitment to children.

The ability to maintain a professional, yet friendly, ongoing relationship with our students and their families throughout the academic year.

How to Apply

If you believe you could fulfill all of the above expectations and would like to apply for a position with Housecalls Tutoring, please send a cover letter and résumé pasted in the body of the email (not attached) to résumé@housecallstutoring.com.

Promising applicants will receive further information regarding the application process.
