Why Housecalls

We Nurture the Growth of Your Child

The growth and development of a child is a precious and fragile process. From the moment children are grouped together, they begin to view themselves in a different way, comparing themselves with others in order to find their value in society. With the grading of their work and the feedback they receive from parents, teachers, and peers, children face a series of academic obstacles. From difficult material and deficient teaching resources to intense competition and perhaps even mild learning disabilities, these hurdles can make a serious dent in a child's confidence.

Housecalls Tutoring is here to help pave the road by making your child's educational pursuits more manageable, and in turn more enriching.

We provide the most qualified mentors for any age and any subject, from pre-K to college.

Tangible Benefits

The Benefits of Housecalls Tutoring

As an experienced pediatrician, Dr. Hugh Gilgoff is an expert on the developmental stages of childhood. Beginning with nursery school and continuing through college, children are being pushed harder than ever before. Housecalls Tutoring's supportive and caring services lead to a real sense of security, but we also place a strong emphasis on promoting academic independence.

With the one-on-one help that we provide, our students discover that they can succeed in the especially demanding academic environment that exists here in New York City.

The truth is, in these highly competitive times, even the most qualified students must worry about whether their college of choice will accept them. Results from each and every examination, from individual classes to the SATs, hold a greater level of significance than ever before. Our aim is not to contribute to the burnout that can result from overworking and a lack of balance or perspective. Rather, we hope to make students' educational pursuits more manageable, and in turn more rewarding.

How We Select Tutors

Housecalls tutors have all made their areas of expertise an integral part of their career paths. This ensures not only a superior working intelligence, but a special passion that will be contagious! Furthermore, the combination of our tutors' successful application of knowledge and their distinctive academic accomplishments creates a shining example for our impressionable and sometimes ambivalent children.

Screening

We extensively screen our tutors, checking resumes and references and asking only the most qualified applicants for an interview. All of our tutors have not only a college degree from a top university, but have pursued graduate-level experience in their area of expertise. Furthermore, all Housecalls tutors have extensive experience in teaching and working with children.

Testing

During the interview process, two major types of tests are administered. An actual subject test (ERB, SAT, or AP) is given, and applicants must achieve a perfect score. Beyond that, they explain difficult concepts in a series of role-plays with Dr. Gilgoff, focusing not only on the actual material, but also the complex interplay between student and mentor.

Housecalls tutors possess immense knowledge and a proven record of success in educating children, but above all, they know how to make learning fun!

There are plenty of qualified intellectuals here in New York, but Housecalls guarantees only the absolute best for your children. Our reputation is all we have to stand on in this business, and we guarantee that you will find each tutor to be a reflection of Dr. Gilgoff's high standards and well-developed learning philosophies.

Tutoring is a two-way street, and a student's lack of motivation and organizational skills can often hinder his or her progress. Our tutors teach not only the subject material, but also how to improve time management and tackle assignments more efficiently. We strive to make learning a positive experience, and we guarantee that our tutors are personable, creative, and flexible in their teaching styles.

Finding The Right Match

Dr. Gilgoff himself will perform a detailed learning inventory for each family new to our service. He will assess the child's learning style, personality, and academic record. He will discuss their organizational skills, academic strengths and weaknesses, passions and goals. He will ask the parents for old report cards, teacher reports, and learning evaluations. Only after really getting to know your child's unique needs will Housecalls Tutoring be able to find the right tutor and formulate an individualized learning plan.

With Dr. Gilgoff's personal knowledge of each tutor's personality and area of expertise, a perfect match is usually made on the first attempt. If, for any reason, the family is not fully satisfied with the first meeting, there is no charge for that session!
